A Look Inside ‘Star Tours – The Adventures Continue’ with Ashley Eckstein and Some Star Wars Friends

Our good friend and former Disney’s Hollywood Studios Cast Member Ashley Eckstein returns today to take us on a quick video tour behind the scenes of “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue.”

Ashley, the voice of Anakin Skywalker’s eager Padawan Ashoka Tano on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, has had quite a busy and exciting week in the Walt Disney World Resort galaxy. In addition to shooting a series of “Star Tours” sneak peek videos for you and other Fan Diney Blog readers (keep a lookout for the next one, an interview with Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald), on Friday she stood alongside fellow Star Wars celebrities and characters, Star Wars creator George Lucas and Walt Disney Co. president and CEO Bob Iger Friday for the gala Grand Opening Ceremony. Then she began her month-long duties as Celebrity Host of Star Wars Weekends 2011 and prepped for the premiere of the newest designs from her popular “Her Universe” line of Star Wars-themed fangirl fashion (she’s debuting new designs that will be available exclusively for a limited time for Star Wars Weekends Guests).

Let’s join Ashley inside the attraction as she talks about some of the exciting new additions to the Star Tours Spaceport. And look for some cameos by some of your favorite Star Wars characters.

Let us know in the comments if you’ve had a chance to experience the attraction yet or if you have a favorite character or destination in the 3-D adventure! (If you’re wondering, I am quite partial to navigating the ice planet of Hoth and the splash-tastic underwater journey through Naboo with its jump-in-your-seat ending. And I love when Admiral “It’s a trap!” Ackbar beams a transmission into our Starspeeder 1000).

Vintage Walt Disney World: Early Space Exploration

When the Space Shuttle Endeavor launched earlier this week, I began thinking how cool it must be to be strapped into the space shuttle as it hurdles itself into outer space. Of course, here at the Walt Disney World Resort you can have a similar experience over at Mission: SPACE at Epcot.

Original Star Jets at Magic Kingdom Park in July 1977

But the Magic Kingdom Park has offered guests the thrill of “space flight” since Nov. 28, 1974. Here is a photograph of the original Star Jets from Tomorrowland in July 1977. It is quite a stark comparison to what guests see today when they board the Astro Orbiter, which opened in 1994 and added a solar system to the Magic Kingdom Park skyline.

Astro Orbiter at Magic Kingdom Park

While I never had the opportunity to take a spin on the original Star Jets, I finally took flight on the Astro Orbiter, believe it or not, just three years ago. I’m not sure why it took me so long, but it sure is fun to fly high above Magic Kingdom Park.

Theme Park Tip

Tip of the Day: Get to the parks 30-40 minutes before it opens to beat the crowds! Worried about getting too tired later in the day? Go back to the hotel in the afternoon when crowds are at their largest. You will rest up during the hottest part of the day, and can always head back in the evening to catch the fireworks!

Vintage Walt Disney World: The Meaning of ‘Contemporary’

With the recent announcement of the health and wellness suites planned for Disney’s Contemporary Resort, I began to wonder what the guest rooms looked like when the resort opened.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort in September of 1972

Lucky for me, I didn’t have to dig too deep to find this shot of a guest room from September of 1972. Did you know that the resort’s hotel rooms were put together on an assembly line at a special plant at a rate of approximately 15 per day?

Disney’s Contemporary Resort Present Day

When comparing that room with the current guest room, clearly the meaning of “contemporary” has changed over the years. I believe the table and chairs from the 1972 room is back in style again! Who has a set at home? I know there is someone!

Have you seen Gertie at Disney’s Hollywood Studios?

Have you ever spotted the towering dinosaur that stands on the side of Echo Lake at Disney’s Hollywood Studios? It always catches my attention whenever I’m on that side of the park because I love “California-crazy” architecture. There’s just something that makes me smile when I drive past a building that’s topped with a 20-foot-tall donut or a fruit stand that’s shaped like a giant navel orange.

Gertie the Dinosaur at Disney's Hollywood Studios

However, this dino, which houses Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction, has often made me wonder…why a dinosaur? If Disney was going to build an over-sized animal in one of its theme parks, why not choose, I don’t know…a giant mouse?

It turns out that this monstrous dino is actually a tribute to Gertie the Trained Dinosaur, who was one of the first popular animated characters in the history of film. The character was not developed by Walt Disney, but by newspaper cartoonist Winsor McCay, who was later considered by many (including Walt) to be a pioneer in early animation.

'Gertie the Dinosaur' Animated Film

In 1913, McCay released a 12-minute short called “Gertie the Dinosaur,” starring the hand-drawn character. The film combined animation with a vaudeville-type performance that made the cartoon appear to be interactive, during which, McCay appeared onstage in front of the film’s projection screen and followed scripted lines “directing” the animated brontosaurus to do tricks, including raising her feet and rolling over. The grand finale of the performance involved McCay disappearing behind a screen and “reappearing” in animated form in the film and riding off on Gertie’s back.

Walt, who was only 12 years old when “Gertie the Dinosaur” was released, later had McCay’s performance recreated to include in a segment called “The Story of the Animated Drawing” to air on his “Disneyland” television series in 1955.

During the segment, Walt explained the significance of this character to the history of animated film, saying, “Winsor McCay’s Gertie and other animation novelties stimulated a great public interest and created a demand for this new medium. This, in turn, encouraged other pioneers to creative efforts that in time, led to the establishment of the animated cartoon as an industry.”

Construction on Gertie the Dinosaur at Disney's Hollywood Studios

In 1989, Walt Disney Imagineers honored Gertie and the role she played in the history of animated film by constructing this over-sized tribute to her at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, a theme park that serves as the ultimate tribute to movie history.

A Look Inside the World Premiere of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' at Disneyland Park

Saturday was quite a day at Disneyland park. For the fourth time in eight years, “Pirates” took over the park for a world premiere event that only Disney could do. The premiere of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” which benefited Boys & Girls Clubs of America, was the first-ever outdoor film premiere in 3D.

Thousands of park guests (many of whom arrived before sunrise) were able to see all the pre-screening excitement unfold as they watched the celebrity arrivals down Main Street, U.S.A., where hundreds of media from all over the world lined the black carpet to speak to the film’s stars and other special guests.

In something of a tradition, and in true Disneyland style, the movie’s stars, including Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane and Geoffrey Rush were introduced before the film started on a specially created stage built on The Rivers of America.
